Family Therapy

Do you have concerns about the behavior or mental health of a family member? Do you want to ensure you and your children develop resiliency as you move through life transitions? Do you have a family member struggling with substance use? Do you own a family business and notice that personal problems are impacting work, and work is impacting personal wellbeing? Are you hoping for a confidential and safe space to talk about family dynamics, problems, and solutions to those problems?

Drawing from Emotionally Focused Family Therapy and Interpersonal Neurobiology, we help family members strengthen relationships and restore harmony to the family system. We know what it is like to care about our family and to struggle within family relationships. Yet we may have a hard time with communication, conflict, or interact in ways that lead to disconnection and general unease.
Our attachment-based approach combines both systemic and experiential interventions to open up healthy communication and support within the family system.

Family Therapy enables all members of the family to develop healthy communication, shift out of negative interaction patterns, and cultivate emotional responsiveness. A primary goal of therapy is to create accessibility that promotes healing and fosters a family's resilience to the everyday and unexpected challenges of life. Rather than just focusing on behaviors or symptoms, our therapists focus on the emotional, nervous system, and regulatory experiences within a family and the problematic patterns that stop family members from accessing the resources they would otherwise share.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ages of the children you see in family therapy?

We work with families that have children ages 12 and older at this time. If your children are younger than age 12, we can still do family therapy, yet your child will not attend therapy with us. We can provide you with referalls of therapists that do counseling with children ages 12 and younger.

Will our entire family attend therapy?

The answer to this question depends largely on the challenges, ages of the children, and goals of the family. Family therapy may include individuals, dyads, groups or the entire family. It may begin with one or two people and shift and change over time as therapy progresses. For example, therapy may start with the parents but may eventually include the children, parent-child dyads, and other groupings. Your family therapist will suggest the best way to structure sessions.

I want to do family therapy but the other members of my family won't attend. Can you help?

Yes. We can begin therapy without your other family members present. We can help you cultivate new ways of interacting that can will create positive shifts with your family dynamics.  Keep in mind that there is always the possibility that your other family members will be open to attending in the future. If we start with you individually, we may end up referring you to another family therapist if your family members decide to engage in therapy.

Can family therapy be helpful for parents and their adult children?

Absolutely. Family therapy helps parents and their adult children improve relationships, strengthen emotional regulation, and enhance resilience. We are well experienced working with families with adult children.

We believe a family member has an addiction problem. How can you help us?

The therapy we provide should be considered an adjunct to, preparation for, and supportive of, one's addiction and recovery. We do not provide direct services in substance use treatment but we can help you find treatment options. Beyond this, family therapy can help in a few ways. One, our focus is on opening up healthy communication. We enable a sense of safety to be developed so that compassionate, honest, and direct communication is possible. Two, we help the family develop emotional responsiveness. Many individuals develop addictive behaviors because they have not yet developed healthy coping methods (for emotional distress, anxiety, depression, stress, mental health, etc.). Three, we work with the family to create new patterns and interactions that promote change and recovery. Four, family systems can operate in ways that feed the addiction or it can operate in ways that bolster the chances of long term recovery. Family therapy can be tremendously helpful to begin once someone has entered addiction treatment and through out recovery.

A family member has been diagnosed with severe mental illness, how can you help?

We can provide education as well as practical tools and strategies to help you best support your loved one and promote their treatment and recovery. We can also provide a confidential space for you to problem solve as well as process thoughts and emotions. We aim to help your family serve as a source of strength.
