Frequently asked questions

  • Our family therapy clients have children that are still living at home, ages 10 and older. We also provide family therapy to adults.

  • The answer to this question depends largely on the challenges, ages of the children, and goals of the family. Family therapy may include individuals, dyads, groups or the entire family. It may begin with one or two people and shift and change over time as therapy progresses. For example, therapy may start with the parents but may eventually include the children, parent-child dyads, and other groupings. Your family therapist will suggest the best way to structure sessions.

  • Yes. We can begin therapy without your other family members present. We can help you cultivate new ways of interacting that can will create positive shifts with your family dynamics.  Keep in mind that there is always the possibility that your other family members will be open to attending in the future. If we start with you individually, we may end up referring you to another family therapist if your family members decide to engage in therapy.

  • Absolutely. Family therapy helps parents and their adult children improve relationships, strengthen emotional regulation, and enhance resilience. We are well experienced working with families with adult children.

  • The therapy we provide should be considered an adjunct to, preparation for, and supportive of, one's addiction and recovery. We do not provide direct services in substance use treatment but we can help you find treatment options. Beyond this, family therapy can help in a few ways. One, our focus is on opening up healthy communication. We enable a sense of safety to be developed so that compassionate, honest, and direct communication is possible. Two, we help the family develop emotional responsiveness. Many individuals develop addictive behaviors because they have not yet developed healthy coping methods (for emotional distress, anxiety, depression, stress, mental health, etc.). Three, we work with the family to create new patterns and interactions that promote change and recovery. Four, family systems can operate in ways that feed the addiction or it can operate in ways that bolster the chances of long term recovery. Family therapy can be tremendously helpful to begin once someone has entered addiction treatment and through out recovery.

  • We can provide education as well as strategies to help you best support your loved one and promote their treatment and recovery. We also provide a confidential space for you to process thoughts and emotions and resource yourself. We aim to help your family serve as a source of strength.
